Hunting at Hāwea Station

We’ve curated a once-in-a-lifetime hunting and adventure experience with exclusive and private land access

We take huge pride in our premium free-range herds here on Lake Hāwea Station. We selectively manage our game by keeping the population at a level where the animals are healthy and able to thrive, ultimately optimising antler and horn growth.

Our game resides in the stunning backcountry mountains of the station. The scenery is incredible, the hunting opportunities are vast year round.

Part of our hunting ethos here at Lake Hāwea Station is to only shoot animals at maturity. This ensures all animals on the property have the opportunity to reach their peak potential. The same ethos is applied during all guided hunts and is a core reason why we maintain a high level of premium free range hunting.

What we offer

We combine elite guiding and world-class game to create an unmatched hunting experience, planned to your requirements for days and targets.

Game species we offer:

  • Otago Red Stag / Deer

  • Fallow Deer

  • Chamois

  • Tahr

  • Pigs

We also offer additional guided adventures on the station such as South Island trout fishing and wilderness explorations, to extend your hunting experience with us.

  • 18th March - 18th April

During the roar period, the red deer are most active as it is their mating season, meaning the mature stags are present and letting their cunning demeanour slip.

Renowned for its red deer species, New Zealand offers exceptional hunting opportunities, and we take pride in providing some of the finest free-range red stag hunting in the world.

There are five roar slots between the 18th of March to the 18th of April that are solely focused on securing first class trophy stags. Our minimum stays during this period is 5 nights, 6 days.

Upon the completion of securing a trophy stag, we can then look to hunt other species if this is something you are interested in.

We have three categories for red stags: first class trophy, second class trophy and management stag:

    • A first class trophy is a red stag over 300 Douglas Score

    • A second class trophy sits just below the first class definition

    • A management stag is a stag that is not carrying the true Otago antler shape, but nonetheless, can be of ripping length, mass and character.

While on your hunt here at Lake Hāwea Station, we will only look to take a mature animal that is at the peak of its trophy potential.

  • Outside of the roar season we offer the opportunity to hunt our other game species identified here on Lake Hāwea Station.

Customised hunts of varying days and species are well suited to this time of year.

During this period we drop our stag hunts to a minimum of three nights and four days.

All other species available on the station do not have a minimum number of days. However, we do recommend hunting for no less than two full days. Please refer to our species / seasons list for more information.

All of the accommodation packages remain the same for this time of year.
