Hunting in Summer

Summer hunting on Lake Hāwea Station presents a wide array of opportunities. The summer hunting season begins on the 1st of February and runs through to the 1st of March.

The days are long and the Stags are in transition from velvet to hard antler which provides for some impeccable hunting. During the start of this season the stags are mobbed up and sitting high in the tussock country, moving in the early hours of the morning and the late hours of the evening.

The long days allow for plenty of travel around the property and the opportunity to glass a huge amount of hunting ground. This can be an excellent time to look over a high volume of animals and select one that stands out to you.

There are also plenty of opportunities to relax throughout the day and enjoy the other activities we have on offer here at Lake Hāwea Station.

Autumn hunting and the Red Stag Roar

Our autumn hunting season begins on the 14th of March as we prepare for the pinnacle of hunting here at Lake Hāwea Station; the Red Stag Roar. From the start of the season to the 18th of April we turn the focus to the Red Stag hunting and commit to searching for monster red stags. The hunting opportunities over this time are like no other as we witness one of the greatest spectacles of hunting.

Over the roar period we offer five to six day slots. We are solely focused on securing trophy class red stags with management stags and other species being available upon the completion of a hunt. We offer an array of hunts from physical adventures covering miles on foot, to side by side assisted hunts experiencing prime Otago red stag roar hunting.

After the 18th of April our Fallow Croak begins. During this period, we offer a combination of red stag and fallow buck hunts, as well as dedicated fallow-focused hunts. The fallow croak is an additional monumental period in our hunting calendar. Here we see a huge amount of movement from our fallow, as they let down their guard and appear in large numbers. The fallow buck hunting can cater to all types of hunts, employing calling techniques, we can get up close in person to the fallow, ultimately experiencing incredibly thrilling, high action hunts.

We can also cover ground using side by side holding off likely areas and glassing until we find the desired animals. Our fallow bucks match the quality of our red stags with bucks consistently scoring 250 douglas +.

Winter hunting

Our winter season begins on June 1st, offering a variety of unique hunting experiences. The winter brings short and colder days, marked with plenty of animal movement.

Over this time the scenery shifts into a stunning winter wonderland where the alpine hunting is incredible.

The winter period offers many different types of hunts, with combination hunts being an excellent option.

Our alpine species hunting begins to come into its own as the chamois and tahr prepare to rut.

If a red stag is the core goal, the late winter from the 1st to the 30th of July is recommended. Our stags are mobbed and split up between moving into the low country for winter or selecting high tussocky basins to rest in a feed post roar season.

Our fallow hunting over this time can be challenging, however mobbed bucks can be located and hunted for combination hunts.

Hunting in Spring

Our spring season starts on the 5th of August and runs through to the end of November.

During this season our focus is on the alpine species, as the deer species have dropped their antlers and are out of action. Whilst the alpine species are not in their famed winter coats, this can be the best time of year to locate quality trophies.

The tahr begin to shift to the low country and mob up into bull groups post rut. This time of year is excellent for wilderness hunts that take you to the deepest remote areas of the South Island.
